1 Maccabees is a sober history of the Jewish revolt (167-135 BC) against Antiochus IV, who had defiled the Temple. After Judas Maccabeus recaptured Jerusalem, he cleansed the Temple and rededicated the altar, the origin of Hanukkah, the Feast of Dedication kept in John's Gospel. The book is canonical Scripture for Roman Catholics and the Eastern Orthodox, and history everyone accepts, though not in the Jewish or Protestant canon.
