The Great Schism of 1054: East and West divide

The first enduring split of the mainstream church was between the Greek-speaking East (centered on Constantinople) and the Latin-speaking West (centered on Rome). The estrangement was centuries in the making, different languages, liturgies, and political worlds after the western empire fell, and it crystallized around two disputes that each side reads differently to this day. The first was the filioque: the West had added to the Nicene Creed that the Holy Spirit proceeds "from the Father and the Son" (Latin filioque), which the East rejected as both theologically wrong and an unauthorized change to a creed only a council could alter. The second was the authority of the pope: Rome claimed a universal jurisdiction over the whole church as the successor of Peter, while the East held that the Bishop of Rome was the honored "first among equals" but not a ruler over the other ancient patriarchates. Matters came to a head in 1054, when a papal delegation and the Patriarch of Constantinople exchanged mutual excommunications. Historians stress that 1054 was a symbolic marker rather than a clean break, the final rupture owed as much to the sack of Constantinople by Western crusaders in 1204 as to any single event. Each tradition tells the story as the other side's departure: Catholics as the East's refusal of the papal primacy Christ gave Peter, the Orthodox as Rome's innovation and overreach beyond the shared faith of the councils.
