A corruption of Dumuzi, the Accadian sun-god (the Adonis of the Greeks), the husband of the goddess Ishtar. In the Chaldean calendar there was a month set apart in honour of this god, the month of June to July, the beginning of the summe… Definition from Easton's Bible Dictionary (1897, public domain), a 19th-century Christian reference work. Where scholarship has since moved on: The sun-god reading dates to Assyriological work of the 1880s and is no longer the consensus. Dumuzi is best known by the epithet “the Shepherd” and is understood as a shepherd and vegetation deity.
