Village Galilee

The Galilee of the ministry was a landscape of villages, not cities, the Synoptic Gospels never record Jesus entering the region’s two real cities, Sepphoris and Tiberias. His base, Capernaum, is put by its excavators (Loffreda & Corbo) at no more than ~1,500 people on 10–12 acres of lakeshore; Nazareth was a hamlet, commonly estimated at ~200–400 people (some recent assessments allow up to ~1,000). The small numbers make the scenes more vivid, not less: in a village that size everyone knew everyone, “Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary?” (Mark 6:3), and “all the city was gathered together at the door” (Mark 1:33) describes a packed street of perhaps a few hundred neighbors, not a stadium.
