The life of Jesus

Alpha and Omega

Name or title of JesusNames and titles of Jesus

Greek: Α καὶ Ω (Alpha kai Omega), first and last letters of the Greek alphabet OT background: Yahweh self-identifies as "the first and the last" at Isaiah 41:4; Isaiah 44:6; Isaiah 48:12. The Greek alphabet bookends are functional-equivalent. Three peak passages: Revelation 1:8; Revelation 21:6; Revelation 22:13, bookending Revelation itself.

NT occurrences (all in Revelation)

PassageSpeakerText
Revelation 1:8Lord God"I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty"
Revelation 1:17-18The risen Christ"I am the first and the last, and the Living one. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever and ever"
Revelation 2:8The risen Christ to Smyrna"The first and the last, who was dead, and has come to life, says these things"
Revelation 21:6The One on the throne"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give freely to him who is thirsty from the spring of the water of life"
Revelation 22:13The returning Christ"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End"

Theological framing

Christ-Yahweh identification, Revelation 1:8 attributes "Alpha and Omega" to "the Lord God"; Revelation 1:17-18 and Revelation 22:13 attribute it to Christ. This is among Revelation's most explicit identification of Christ with Yahweh, applying OT's "first and last" YHWH self-declaration directly to Jesus.

Bookend cosmic claim, Christ is the beginning and end of all creation (cf. John 1:3; Colossians 1:16-17) and history (eternal pre-existence + eschatological return).

Liturgical/symbolic use, the Α and Ω symbols became early Christian iconography on tombs, churches, manuscripts, visual shorthand for Christ's divinity.
