Citation: John 1:35-51 || Mark 1:16-20 || Matthew 4:18-22 || Luke 5:1-11, the four gospels narrate the first disciples' calling from different angles; most readers harmonize them as successive stages.
The narratives
By the Jordan, first acquaintance (John 1:35-51). After Jesus' baptism, John the Baptist points two of his own disciples to Jesus: "Behold, the Lamb of God!" One is Andrew; he finds his brother Simon, "We have found the Messiah!", and brings him to Jesus, who says, "You are Simon… you shall be called Cephas" (Peter, "rock"). The next day Jesus calls Philip, and Philip finds Nathanael ("Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?" → "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!").
By the Sea of Galilee, the summons to follow (Mark 1:16-20 || Matthew 4:18-22). Walking by the lake, Jesus sees Simon and Andrew casting a net: "Come after Me, and I will make you to become fishers of men" Immediately they leave the nets. A little farther, James and John are mending nets with their father Zebedee; he calls them, and they leave the boat and their father and follow.
The miraculous catch, the call to leave all (Luke 5:1-11). Teaching from Simon's boat, Jesus tells him to "put out into the deep, and let down your nets." Simon objects, "we worked all night and caught nothing", but obeys, and the nets enclose so many fish they begin to break. Peter falls at Jesus' knees: "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, Lord." Jesus: "Don't be afraid. From now on you will be catching people alive." They bring the boats to land, leave everything, and follow.
Harmonizing the accounts
The variation is among the classic gospel-harmony questions. The most common synthesis reads them as stages of a deepening call:
- Introduction by the Jordan (John 1), they first meet Jesus and believe.
- Summons by the lake (Mark/Matthew), the decisive "follow me" to leave their trade.
- Commissioning catch (Luke 5), the miracle that seals the leaving of "everything."
Others read each evangelist as telling the calling with his own theological shaping rather than reporting strictly separate occasions. Either way, the disciples named here, Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Nathanael, become the nucleus of the Twelve, with Peter and the Zebedee brothers as the later inner circle.
Theological framing
Call and immediate response, the repeated "immediately they left" marks discipleship as a summons that reorders life around Jesus; nets, boat, and father are all left.
"Fishers of men", the trade becomes the metaphor for mission; the catch of fish foreshadows the gathering of people (cf. the post-resurrection catch, John 21:1-14).
Grace meeting unworthiness, Luke's Peter ("I am a sinful man") shows the call coming not to the qualified but to those Jesus makes fit; the response to holiness is fear, met by "don't be afraid."
Jesus' initiative, in every version the movement is from Jesus outward; the disciples are found, named, and called before they understand who he is.
