Greek: ἐγὼ εἰμί (egō eimi), literally "I am" or "I myself am" Hebrew/OT background: אֶהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶהְיֶה (ehyeh asher ehyeh) "I AM WHO I AM" at Exodus 3:14, identifying YHWH (H3068) to Moses at the burning bush. LXX renders: ἐγὼ εἰμί ὁ ὤν "I am the One Who Is." Peak NT moment: John 8:58 "Most certainly, I tell you, before Abraham came into existence, I AM." The Jews respond by picking up stones (John 8:59), they understand the claim as divine self-identification with YHWH.
The seven "I AM" predicate sayings in John
Each is metaphor + predicate identification:
| # | Saying | Reference | Background image |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | "I am the bread of life" | John 6:35,48 | Manna in wilderness (Exodus 16); Passover bread; bread-of-Presence |
| 2 | "I am the light of the world" | John 8:12; John 9:5 | Pillar of fire (Exodus 13:21); creation light (Genesis 1:3); Feast-of-Tabernacles temple lamps |
| 3 | "I am the door (of the sheep)" | John 10:7,9 | Shepherd-fold imagery |
| 4 | "I am the good shepherd" | John 10:11,14 | Psalms 23; Ezekiel 34 (false shepherds → Yahweh as true shepherd) |
| 5 | "I am the resurrection and the life" | John 11:25 | At Lazarus's tomb |
| 6 | "I am the way, the truth, and the life" | John 14:6 | Upper Room, "no one comes to the Father except through me" |
| 7 | "I am the true vine" | John 15:1,5 | Israel-as-vineyard imagery (Isaiah 5; Psalms 80:8-16) |
The absolute "I AM" sayings in John
Distinct from the predicate sayings, Jesus speaks ἐγὼ εἰμί without a completing predicate, claiming the divine name itself:
| Passage | Text |
|---|---|
John 8:24 | "unless you believe that I am he [ἐγὼ εἰμί], you will die in your sins" |
John 8:28 | "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he" |
John 8:58 | "Before Abraham came into existence, I AM", climactic; Jews respond with stones |
John 13:19 | "From now on, I tell you before it happens, that when it happens, you may believe that I am he" |
John 18:5-6 | Soldiers say they seek Jesus of Nazareth; Jesus: "I am he", they fall to the ground (echo of theophany?) |
Theological framing (multiple views)
Divine self-identification (mainstream trinitarian), Jesus's absolute "I AM" sayings deliberately invoke Exodus 3:14 (YHWH's self-revelation). The stoning response at John 8:59 shows the audience understood this. Confirms divine claim alongside human dependency (John 5:19 "the Son can do nothing of himself"). Anchors high Christology.
Hellenistic-rhetorical reading (some scholars), ἐγὼ εἰμί is conventional Greek-self-identification syntax ("I am the one you seek"); the Exodus-3 reading imports trinitarian content the audience may not have intended. Most commentators reject this because John 8:59's stoning response can't be explained otherwise.
Mystical-experience reading (some non-canonical Christianities), "I AM" expresses Jesus's mystical realization of the divine Self also available to all who awaken. Recorded for historical completeness, not as this synthesis's own reading.
Trinitarian + Jewish-Christian, Jesus's "I AM" is the OT YHWH identifying himself; this is the second person of the Trinity speaking the divine name on his own behalf. The Father, Son, and Spirit all share the one YHWH-identity.
