Prophecies fulfilled by John the Baptist's preparatory ministry + Jesus's baptism / temptation / first Galilean preaching / Nazareth synagogue self-application.
1. Voice in the wilderness, Isaiah 40:3 → Matthew 3:3 || Mark 1:3 || Luke 3:4 || John 1:23
"The voice of one who calls out, 'Prepare the way of Yahweh in the wilderness! Make a level highway in the desert for our God.'"
NT application: All four gospels apply Isaiah 40:3 to John the Baptist. The Fourth Gospel records John quoting it about himself (John 1:23). John's ministry: water-baptism in the Jordan, calling Israel to repentance for the coming kingdom.
2. Messenger before the face, Malachi 3:1 → Matthew 11:10 || Mark 1:2 || Luke 7:27
"Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. The Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to his temple."
NT application: Jesus applies Malachi 3:1 to John the Baptist at Matthew 11:10 and Luke 7:27 (during his eulogy of John after John's arrest). Mark's gospel opens with the Malachi 3:1 + Isaiah 40:3 conflation at Mark 1:2-3.
3. Elijah-figure, Malachi 4:5-6 → Matthew 11:14; Matthew 17:10-13
"Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and terrible day of Yahweh comes."
NT application: Jesus identifies John as the prophesied Elijah-figure at Matthew 11:14 ("if you are willing to receive it, this is Elijah, who is to come") and Matthew 17:12-13 (after the Transfiguration). Note Jesus's qualifier "if you are willing to receive it", the identification is conditional on faith-reception, not absolute.
John himself denied being Elijah personally (John 1:21). The reconciliation: John was not the literal-returned-Elijah but came "in the spirit and power of Elijah" (Luke 1:17).
4. Galilean light, Isaiah 9:1-2 → Matthew 4:13-16
"The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined."
NT application: Matthew cites Isaiah 9:1-2 explicitly at Matthew 4:13-16 when Jesus relocates from Nazareth to Capernaum to launch his Galilean ministry, fulfilling the prophecy that the light dawns in Galilee (Zebulun + Naphtali territory).
Notes: Original context of Isaiah 9 includes the famous "to us a child is born" royal-titles passage (Isaiah 9:6-7). Matthew's selection of vv.1-2 frames Jesus's location (Galilee) as prophecy fulfillment. The titles in vv.6-7 distribute across NT Christology more broadly.
5. Spirit-anointed proclamation, Isaiah 61:1-2 → Luke 4:18-21
"The Lord Yahweh's Spirit is on me, because Yahweh has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to those who are bound, to proclaim the year of Yahweh's favor."
NT application: Jesus reads Isaiah 61:1-2 in the Nazareth synagogue (Luke 4:16-21) and applies it directly to himself: "Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." This is among the most explicit Jesus self-application of OT Messianic prophecy.
Notes: Jesus stops reading at "the year of Yahweh's favor" (Isaiah 61:2a); the next line ("and the day of vengeance of our God," Isaiah 61:2b) is reserved for a future-eschatological-fulfillment, traditionally identified with the Second Coming. The deliberate mid-verse stopping is theologically significant, Jesus's first coming inaugurates favor; vengeance/judgment awaits a later phase.
6. Servant Song 1, Isaiah 42:1-4 → Matthew 12:18-21
"Behold, my servant, whom I uphold; my chosen, in whom my soul delights. I have put my Spirit on him. He will bring justice to the nations. He will not cry, nor lift up his voice, nor cause it to be heard in the street."
NT application: Matthew cites Isaiah 42:1-4 at Matthew 12:18-21 after Jesus heals on the Sabbath and the Pharisees plot against him. The "quietness" of the prophecy explains Jesus's withdrawal from confrontation, he's not the militant Messiah the Pharisees fear.
