Question
Are there dinosaurs in the Bible? What does the Bible say about dinosaurs?
Analysis
What the text actually says, before anyone interprets it
Genesis states that God made the sea creatures and the land animals, including the creatures that creep on the ground (Genesis 1:21; Genesis 1:24-25), and that all of it was good. Whatever dinosaurs were, on any Christian reading they are creatures God made, that much is not in dispute between the positions below.
Job 40–41 is poetry inside a speech by God, describing creatures to humble Job. That genre matters: the passage is not a field guide, and its descriptions include lines that are hard to take as plain zoology on any view (Leviathan breathing fire and smoke, Job 41:19-21).
The main readings, attributed
| View | Position | Held by |
|---|---|---|
| Behemoth and Leviathan are dinosaurs | Land animals were made on day six alongside humans, so dinosaurs and people coexisted. Behemoth's cedar-like tail fits a large sauropod, not a hippo or elephant, whose tails are small. Dinosaurs died out after the Flood. | Young-earth creationists |
| They are known animals, described poetically | Behemoth is the hippopotamus or elephant; Leviathan is the crocodile or a stylised sea monster. Dinosaurs went extinct about 66 million years ago, long before humans, and the Bible simply does not mention them. | Old-earth creationists; evolutionary-creation writers; most mainstream biblical scholars |
| They are chaos-creatures of ancient Near Eastern poetry | Leviathan functions in Scripture and in surrounding literature as an image of the chaotic sea that God alone masters (Psalms 74:14; Isaiah 27:1). The point is God's sovereignty, not the identification of a species. | Framework / literary-view theologians; many Old Testament scholars |
Where the disagreement actually sits
Notice that the three readings do not divide over whether the Bible is true. They divide over the age of the earth and over how Hebrew poetry is meant to be read, two questions handled in the companion entries on the creation days and the Genesis account.
Contested / interpretive points
- The 'tail like a cedar' argument (Job 40:17) is the strongest point for the dinosaur reading and the most disputed. The Hebrew verb is often rendered 'stiffens' or 'makes rigid'; some argue the term can refer to another part of the animal, which the opposing side rejects.
- Fossil evidence and dating are outside what the text itself settles. Mainstream geology and palaeontology place non-avian dinosaur extinction about 66 million years ago; young-earth writers dispute the dating methods. Bubble Bible does not adjudicate that scientific question, it lies outside our sources, and we do not assert conclusions we cannot trace.
- ⚠️ A caution about popular claims. Material circulating online often attaches confident scientific 'facts' to Bible passages that turn out to be wrong or unsourced, for example the widely repeated figures of '100 trillion cells in the body' (current estimates are nearer 37 trillion) and '100 billion neurons' (nearer 86 billion, and the 100-billion figure has no peer-reviewed source). Verify a scientific claim before repeating it in a Bible study, whichever position you hold.
- This entry takes no position on the age of the earth or on the identity of Behemoth. What is stated flatly is only what can be checked: the word 'dinosaur' post-dates the translations, and the passages describe creatures whose identification is disputed.
