Practical help
- Pray against anxiety, specific requests with thanksgiving (Philippians 4:6); gratitude reframes fear; pour out racing thoughts honestly, like the lament psalms (Psalms 55).
- Cast it on God, a deliberate hand-over (1 Peter 5:7; Psalms 55:22), then refuse to pick it back up.
- Stay in today, … (Matthew 6:34); today's grace for today (Lamentations 3:22-23).
- Fix the mind, on what is true, lovely, of good report (Philippians 4:8); "mind stayed on thee" (Isaiah 26:3); "be still, and know that I am God" (Psalms 46:10).
- Use God's resources, Scripture, prayer, the Spirit's help (Romans 8:26), sabbath rest (Mark 6:31), and community that bears burdens (Galatians 6:2).
Everyday worry vs clinical anxiety (important)
Scripture's "be not anxious" addresses the divided, distrustful heart. But it also knows overwhelming distress that is not mere faith-failure, Elijah's collapse (1 Kings 19), Paul "despaired even of life" (2 Corinthians 1:8), Christ's agony in Gethsemane (Luke 22:44). For persistent, panic-level, or disabling anxiety, the wise and faithful step is qualified care (a doctor or counselor) alongside prayer, the both/and, never either/or. God is gentle with the anxious: "a bruised reed shall he not break" (Isaiah 42:3).
