What is lust, and how do I overcome it?

Short answer

In the Bible, lust is disordered, cultivated sexual desire, Jesus locates it in the heart: "whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart" (Matthew 5:28). It is condemned as part of the sexual immorality (porneia) believers are told to flee (1 Corinthians 6:18; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5), and the guarding of the eyes and heart is the front line (Job 31:1; Proverbs 4:23). Overcoming it is the Bible's both/and: serious resolve (flee, guard, …) and grace, walking by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16), accountability in community (James 5:16), the promised way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13), and full forgiveness when you fall (1 John 1:9; Romans 8:1). Crucially, temptation is not the same as sin: Christ "was in all points tempted… yet without sin" (Hebrews 4:15); sin is when desire is conceived and entertained (James 1:14-15).

What lust is, and isn't

  • Lust = cultivated, covetous sexual desire that uses another person (or image) as an object (Matthew 5:28; Exodus 20:17 coveting).
  • Attraction / involuntary temptation is not yet sin (Hebrews 4:15; James 1:14-15), it becomes sin when nurtured and acted on in the heart. This distinction matters pastorally: a passing temptation shouldn't be loaded with the guilt of cultivated lust.
  • The spiritual consequences the Bible names: it wars against the soul (1 Peter 2:11), enslaves (2 Peter 2:19; Titus 3:3), and (unrepented, as a pattern of life) is incompatible with the kingdom (Galatians 5:19-21; Ephesians 5:5), said not to crush the struggler but to show why it matters.

Accountability matters because lust thrives in secrecy; confession and a trusted brother/sister bring it into the light (James 5:16; Proverbs 28:13). For compulsive patterns, qualified help is wise, the same both/and this reference applies to other addictions.
