Three different Hebrew verbs
English uses "harden" for all of these. The Hebrew uses three different verbs:
| Hebrew | Meaning | Where |
|---|---|---|
| chazaq (H2388) | to be or make strong, firm | the most common, Exodus 4:21, Exodus 7:13, Exodus 9:12, Exodus 10:20, Exodus 14:8 and others |
| kaved (H3513) | to be or make heavy | Exodus 8:15, Exodus 8:32, Exodus 9:7, Exodus 9:34, Exodus 10:1 |
| qashah (H7185) | to make hard, stubborn | Exodus 7:3 |
Two details are worth knowing:
- Chazaq is the same verb used of David: "But David found strength in the LORD his God." (1 Samuel 30:6, BSB) The word itself means to make strong or firm; what matters is what the heart is made strong against.
- Kaved also carries the sense "honor." In Exodus 14:4 and Exodus 14:17, God says He will harden the heart and then "I will gain honor by means of Pharaoh and all his army" (Exodus 14:4, BSB). "Gain honor" there is the same Hebrew root as the "heavy" heart, in its other sense.
How Paul uses the story
"For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: 'I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed in all the earth.' Therefore God has mercy on whom He wants to have mercy, and He hardens whom He wants to harden." (Romans 9:17-18, BSB)
Where Christians divide
| View | The reading | Where it is found |
|---|---|---|
| God's sovereign decree | God announced the hardening before any plague (Exodus 4:21), and Paul draws the conclusion that God "hardens whom He wants to harden" (Romans 9:18). The hardening served God's purpose that His name be known. | The Reformed / Calvinist tradition. |
| God confirmed Pharaoh's own choice | Pharaoh hardened his own heart through five plagues before the narrator ever says God did; God then gave him over to what he had already chosen, as a judgment. | Arminian and Wesleyan traditions, and many others. |
| Both at once | Pharaoh truly chose and God truly hardened, and the text holds the two together without resolving them; Exodus 7:13 itself says the heart was hardened "just as the LORD had said." (BSB) | Common across many traditions. |
The interpretive fault lines
| Question | Emphasis on decree | Emphasis on Pharaoh's choice |
|---|---|---|
| What do the announcements (Exodus 4:21; Exodus 7:3) show? | God's plan came first. | God foresaw what Pharaoh would do. |
| Why does "the LORD hardened" appear only from plague six? | The narrator shows the outworking of what was already decreed. | God's act followed and confirmed Pharaoh's repeated refusals. |
| What does Romans 9:17-18 mean? | God's freedom to harden whom He wills. | Paul is defending God's right to judge a people, not describing individual salvation. |
