All: Where the oldest copies differ

Where the oldest copies differ

The verses your Bible may not print

This is measurable, not remembered. Six complete English Bibles are hosted here. Asking of each chapter which verse numbers does this version actually print? and comparing the answers gives the list directly. Across 1,402 chapters compared, the six disagree in 20 New Testament places and, once the Psalm headings that some versions number as a verse are set aside, none in the Old Testament.

The sixteen that are the familiar "missing verses", present in the King James, absent from at least two modern versions here:

Matthew17:21 · 18:11 · 23:14
Mark7:16 · 9:44 · 9:46 · 11:26 · 15:28
Luke17:36 · 23:17
John5:4
Acts8:37 · 15:34 · 24:7 · 28:29
Romans16:24

The other four are about numbering rather than content, the same words divided differently: 3 John 1:15, Revelation 12:18, and the doxology at the end of Romans, which the World English Bible prints as 14:24-26 where the others print it as 16:25-27.

⚠️

This method finds one shape of difference and misses two. It finds a verse one Bible prints and another omits. It cannot see a passage that every version prints but the oldest copies lack, the ending of Mark and the woman caught in adultery are both in all six, and it cannot see a verse whose wording differs, which is what happens at 1 John 5:7. Those are the next three sections. A list is only as honest as the statement of what it cannot contain.
