How to choose: compare, and let no version be crowned

Because the labels name trade-offs, choosing a Bible is about purpose, not ranking. For close study, a more word-for-word version keeps you near the original wording (the English Standard, the New American Standard, the King James, and, among ours, the Literal Standard and American Standard Versions). For a first read-through or reading aloud, a more readable version carries the sense clearly (the New International and New Living Translations, and, among ours, the Free Bible Version and the Berean Standard Bible). Many readers simply keep one of each. But the single most useful habit costs nothing and needs no Hebrew or Greek: compare. Read a passage in two or three versions side by side, and wherever they noticeably diverge you have found a spot where the original is rich, ambiguous, or hard, a flag telling you it is worth a closer look, not a reason for worry. This is the old Berean practice, which Scripture actually commends: they were "examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so" (Acts 17:11, World English Bible), and Paul tells the Thessalonians to "test all things. Hold fast to what is good" (1 Thessalonians 5:21, Berean Standard Bible). The honest bottom line for choosing: pick the version, or versions, you will actually read, the "best" Bible is the one you open. Naming no single winner is not a dodge; it is the truthful answer, because the versions are aiming at the same text by different, legitimate routes.
